Hair Extensions
Hair extensions can be added onto your normal hair to give it instant
extra length and volume. They can also be used to cover over a bad hair cut.
Good extensions should last for up to three months.
Applying hair extensions
The extensions artist/hairdresser will braid the tracks firmly but comfortably.
The tension applied will be even all over the head and shouldn't feel as if its
pulling or hurting. If anyone tells you that it has to be really tight to be secure or you feel pain, ask them to stop, then LEAVE!!
You will feel the extensions on your head for a day or two afterwards, but then you will hardly feel the difference.
Length of hair extensions
Extensions can be any length up to about 26 inches - 30 inches.
If they are longer than this they will put too much weight on your scalp which can
cause uneven pressure and damage your natural hair.
A length of 22 inches or less is commonly considered to give best looking hair extensions
for women of average height.
Caring for hair extensions
Looking after your hair extensions is different from caring for your natural hair. You need to know:
- Use a soft bristle brush when brushing your hair. Begin by brushing from the bottom and slowly move towards the top.
- Tie your hair up while sleeping.
- The best solution for untangling hair extensions is to run your fingers though them.
- Spraying your extensions with conditioners or silicone-based products can cause the braids to slip.

Hair Highlights
Highlighting involves taking strands of hair and making them lighter than
the rest of your hair. The highlighted hair should be no more than two shades different from your
own natural colour. The effect should make your hair look 'sun-kissed' and vibrant.
How to highlight your hair
- Wash your hair with shampoo two or more days before adding highlights.
- Make sure the highlighting mixture is not out of date.
- When you mix the colour, use it immediately!
- Always wear tight-fitting latex gloves.
- Apply highlights first to the back of your head first then work your forward.
This will stop you smearing the front by reaching over to do the back.
- Only highlight the top layer of your hair.
This will create an impression of depth and a completely natural and sun-kissed effect!

Using the Correct Hairbrush
Choice of hairbrush is an important, commonly overlooked part
of looking after your hair. Choosing the wrong type of hairbrush could cause unnecessary
damage unwanted curling of your hair. Similarly, using a good brush will help spread
natural protective oils throughout your hair.
Hairbrush tips
- Never brush dripping wet strands. Doing so will rip the hair shaft and produce split ends.
- If you have curly or wavy hair that you blow dry use a round, bristle brush.
Note, a wider brush will produce straighter hair once it dries.
- Use a flat, paddle brush for daily brushing of straight or wavy hair.
- Select a boar-bristle, round hairbrush if you have straight hair that you blow-dry.
This will help shape and smooth your hair.
- Use a pick to separate curls without causing excessive frizz.
